Contra dancing is usually done with partners in two long lines and has similarities to square dancing. The contra dance lessons offered will be a series of three classes to get people started on the basic movements. After that, students will be required to attend one Strong contra dance held the fourth Saturday of the month. Admission is included in the class fee of $25. This series of classes will be offered once a month.
Shoes
Many different types of shoes can be worn for Contra Dancing. It's really just the dancer's preference and any rules that wherever the dancer is dancing may have about what kinds of shoes can be used on their floor. We recommend comfortable shoes with laces like sneakers or jazz shoes, but any shoe that laces, from ballet shoes to dress shoes can be worn. Sometimes contra dancers even dance in bare feet!
Clothing
Traditionally, women at contra dances will wear longish skirts that have a nice twirl to them due to the high frequency of spins and turns in Contra Dancing. However, anything that the dancer is comfortable in will work. For our classes, please come dressed modestly. I found the picture below on the Upper Catskill Community Council of the Arts website, and I think it represents the clothing nicely.
